Comic Geeks and Gays

I've never been a comic book reader. As a card carrying non-conformist, I feel ashamed to admit this and know I'd be way cooler in a super-dork kind of way if I had a stash of comics at home. (Does 'Tom of Finland' count?)

Super Hero Not that I don't care at all about comic-y things, I do. I like super hero movies and have had plenty of fantasies about making sexy time with Batman (played by Christian Bale, duh!). I missed the opening episodes of 'Heroes,' so I'm not watching that and regret it. But at the end of the day, I like to read real books. (WHAT!? That line is going to generate hate mail??? Sorry, kidding!)

I recognize that comics are huge with the gays, however, so even though I'm comics-deficient, I have three shares for you today.

First, at the suggestion of the randy editors at Queerty, I created my own super hero (see my handiwork above) over at this Marvel site. I tried to make the gayest super hero ever, as evidenced by the restrained use of a tasteful black and gray palette. I'm super proud of my comet-red accents and Cher-inspired accessories. Do you love these shoes, or what? What hetero super hero do you know who has the guts to wear red espadrilles? In the winter! 'Nuf said.

Comics Alliance logo Second, for you true comics fans, you need to know that two of my more awesome AOL colleagues have started a new blog I bet you will want to read. Aptly named Comics Alliance, the blog features an alliance of geeky bloggers who wax poetic daily about stuff of which I know absolutely nothing, and post photos of people dressed up in sexy/powerful/geeky outfits.

These two aforementioned guys -- I'll call them "Chris" and "John" -- recently attended the gi-normous New York Comic Con (they are still trying to tell me this was "work") where they hobnobbed with other geeks and even stalked Stephen King, Stan Lee and
Kevin Smith. Take it from me: Chris and John don't just look like huge geeks, they really are geeks. So if you're one too, join their mysterious Alliance. [PS: One of them is even gay, and we'd gladly add the other one to our team, too, but he's married so hands off.]

Finally, while this isn't a comic in the printed sense, you might enjoy the animated web comic 'The Gay Monsters,' where "drab is fab." As they say, "the closet is no place for a monster."

Geeks!
