Isaiah Washington Wins NAACP Image Award. Huh?

Here's a lesson that young Americans were taught this weekend: When you grow up to be a famous actor, call your colleague at work a faggot, lie low for a few weeks till the hubub dies down, keep your high-paying/high-visibility job, and you, too, can go on to win an Image Award from the NAACP.

What are the NAACP Image Awards? From their site:
"Presented annually, the NAACP Image Awards is the nation's premier event celebrating the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice ... Ideas and images create the belief systems that control our individual and societal actions. When it comes to forming ideas, reinforcing stereotypes, establishing norms and shaping our thinking nothing affects us more than the images and concepts delivered into our lives on a daily basis by television and film."

Is anyone besides me a bit sick at seeing the NAACP give Isaiah Washington an Image Award only weeks after he showed his true colors as a homophobe by describing fellow actor T.R. Knight as a faggot?

Social justice indeed. I think the NAACP needs to re-read the criteria for their awards.

One other thing: People are commending Washington for being "humble" in his acceptance speech. Phooey. How hard is it to be humble when you're standing on stage, on TV, having been paid a huge compliment by your community of peers despite the disgraceful deed that came before? Not hard at all.
