One of the nation's leading Southern Baptists has called for a policy that would support medical treatment, if it were to become available, to change the sexual orientation of a fetus inside its mother's womb from homosexual to heterosexual. This latest assault on our dignity and existence comes from no less a personage than Rev. R. Albert Mohler, the president of the prominent and influential Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary is the flagship school of the Southern Baptist Convention and one of the largest seminaries in the world.
Acknowledging the strides that genetic science is making in identifying and isolating genetic abnormalities, defects and
diseases, Mohler embraces this advance in medical science as yet another tool in the war to root out and cleanse sin. The good reverend explains that "Given the consequences of the Fall and the effects of human sin, we should not be surprised that such a causation or link is found. After all, the human genetic structure, along with every other aspect of creation, shows the pernicious effects of the Fall and of God's judgment."
Simply put, Mohler believes that homosexuality is one of God's ways of punishing us for original sin. And now science promises to provide a new means to root out sin and temptation even before birth.
"If a biological basis is found, and if a prenatal test is then developed, and if a successful treatment to reverse the sexual orientation to heterosexual is ever developed, we would support its use as we should unapologetically support the use of any appropriate means to avoid sexual temptation and the inevitable effects of sin," Mohler wrote in advice for Christians.
Mohler restates his opposition to aborting fetuses or embryos who "are identified as homosexual in orientation," but said advancement on determining a biological basis for such orientation should be used "for the greater glory of God."

These Southern Baptists Fascists are just amazing, they scream the words of the bible in oneugg boots breath, while slapping the hand of God - because God has the audacity to bestow the heathen faggot on an otherwise perfect world.

What a great time for a sane, loving proclamation of the Bible. Oh no! It's getting worse. We know that all people of faith (or maybe it's just christians) are twisted hypocrites who have hijacked the Bible for their own sick, perverted concepts.ugg boots

There is also research that is demonstrating that strong authoritarian beliefs are also brain-based. I strongly support any treatments that would fix this problem in utero and even would support the outright abortion of such fetuses.
Imagine a world without Southern Baptists! And wouldn't that be a good thing?

Albert Mohler is going to have his hands full wishing for in-utero cures for all the ways in which so-called original sin might present later in life.
I hope he's in support of a cure for men who cheat on their wives, too? Is there a cure for that in pipieline? If so, perhaps Newt Gingrich can be his poster boy since in today's news he admits to "[falling] short of God's standards."
"Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich acknowledged he was having an extramarital affair even as he led the charge against President Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair, he acknowledged in an interview with a conservative Christian group."

Not that being gay should be equated with cheating on one's wife. Being gay is way more respectable.

This man not only has a serious Messiah complex, he's projecting his own demons on everyone else. I would say he and Ted Haggard should get together, but I think Ted has better taste than that.

I would be curious as to his position on stem cell research. I'm guessing he doesn't "embrace" that particular medical advancement. Just a guess.

Outrageous. I would have thought the correct way to eradicate sin is through internal struggle, not some easy plug-n-play mod. 3 weeks of intensive prayer fixes it, right?

I'll agree to it only as long as we are allowed to sterilize Baptists at the same time. I will say that he has just acknowledged that homosexual is a genetic/biological condition and that is a first for Baptist leadership!

Hmm... does this mean that the Religious Right is acknowledging that homosexuality is a genetic issue, and not a choice...??

Try this in for size.
The human species is an enormously complex organism with self-regulating mechanisms having evolved over time. Its regulatory and protection systems aren't perfect, but they're good enough.
Not perfect: we humans have cancer, insanity, suicide, warfare, starvation, environmental degradation, mental and physical deformities, and... homosexuality. Good enough: we manage to survive. We may kill each other and ourselves, and have characteristics not supportive of species survival, but not to the point where our very existence is wiped out or survival seriously threatened. Even when huge numbers of humans were wiped out by plague, diarrhea/dysentary,cholera, warfare, the species/organism managed to carry on. Just as physical and medical infirmity is a not conducive to survival of the species, homosexuality can be viewed similarly,a flaw in the organism. Consider that it's not a coincidence that the percentage of members of the species practicing homosexuality (3-8%) has always held stable, and has never remotely approached a percentage that might threaten continued existence or gene pool diversity. Consider homosexuality as a defect in the human species/organism that the organism recognizes as a threat to its survival, and manages to keep in check. Perhaps, as the organism continues to evolve and adapt, things like infanticide, "ethnic cleansing," and other things not supportive of the continued survivial of the species, will be phased out.
Just an idea.

Johnathon said it all. I could not agree more. Imagine aborting all right wing religious nutcases right in the womb.!!!!

It's really too bad that an in utero technique to address religious myopia, and even religious retardation, could not have been discovered before October 19th, 1959...

Nice accidental admission-through-logic on the part of this Baptist toad: if homosexuality can be "fixed" genetically, then it is genetic, and therefore not subject to conscious choice. He just undermined the entire project of "curing" homsexuals through therapy.

Of the Southern Baptist that I know (1) almost all are white and (2) many are still largely biased against blacks, would Rev. Mohler support genetic engineering to make all humans white like the typical Southern Baptist? I suspect that he would.

According to the article,"Mohler believes that homosexuality is one of God's ways of punishing us for original sin". How exactly is homosexuality a punishment?

He's simply trying to cover his behind for the inevitable future scientific evidence that people are born gay. The anti-gay crusaders have always known that conclusive evidence of innate gayness would deal a death blow to their ex-gay industry and it's warped teachings that homosexuality is learned behavior that can change.
Now, he has warped his self-projection into a theory that God built gayness into us biologically as punishment for original sin! He's a slick one.

Of course, should the genetic engineering result in a severe mutation - that's okay, as long as the results aren't homosexual.
