A lesbian in Georgia may single-handedly set gay adoption law in a backward spiral. How? She is playing the gay card in a twisted manner in order to deny shared custody of a child. Get this:
Lesbian #1 and Lesbian #2 fall in love.
Lesbian #1 gets pregnant, has child.
Love is in the air for the happy family with new baby.
Couple asks court to allow Lesbian #2 to legally adopt baby. Done. Now baby has two mommies.
Four years later, love leaves the air and lesbians break up.
Lesbian #1 (birth mom) sues for full custody using the argument that since the law in Georgia (their home state) doesn't specifically allow gay adoption, the adoptive mother has zero parental rights.
Sara Wheeler, aka Lesbian #1, was happy to ask the court to treat her and her partner with respect by recognizing the needs of gay and lesbian families and approving the adoption ... Until it became legally expedient for her to ask the court to interpret the law in a way that treats gay families unequally and rule the adoption null and void because their state has no law that specifically says gays can adopt.
Sara Wheeler knows her lawsuit could threaten the rights of all gay families who have adopted in Georgia, but she doesn't care. Sara Wheeler is selling gays down the river because she reportedly got a new girlfriend and wants nothing to do with the old one. Even though their son bonded with Missy, mom #2, until he was four years old, Sara Wheeler deems the relationship between Missy and their son meaningless.
Stories like this make me crazy. Sometimes I fantasize about having a gay tribunal where we could deal with traitors to the gay community. This is one of those times.
