Yup. According to a new study out of Australia, queers are the most hated minority in the Western world. The good news is that you're not paranoid. People really do hate you. In fact, throughout the Western world, heterosexuals would rather live next door to people from another race, immigrants, foreign workers, Muslims and even Jews than live next to you! Those of us who are members of two or more minorities, like a gay Ethiopian Jew or a Nigerian Muslim Lesbian are seriously screwed.
In addition to being voted No. 1, the other bit of good news is that we're more hated in nine other countries than in our own United States. In fact while only 22.9 percent of Americans would not want a fag living next door, a whopping 35.9 percent of the the Northern Irish would much rather borrow a cup of sugar from a darkie or a yid than a poof--in fact by a margin of almost 3.5 to 1! Now that's some world class homophobia! Other nationalities that beat out America in the homophobia sweepstakes? Italy, Ireland, Greece (no wonder Alexander left and Socrates killed himself), Austria, Portugal (I guess all their queers moved to Brazil), Australia and Great Britain (It's Sir Elton's bad hairpieces, I'd bet).
Best places to be queer? Well, no surprises there. Sweden came in at No. 1 followed by Denmark, Iceland (those folks are just glad to have company no matter who it is) and the Netherlands. (Following is a clip from Swedish Idol.)
And in case you were interested, the second most hated minority in the Western world? Duh. Muslims, of course--with one big exception. Some 500 years after Ferdinand and Isabella threw the Jews out of Spain, the Spanish are still Europe's top Jew-haters. In fact, the Spanish hate Jews almost 25% more than fags making Spain the only country in the Western world that put queers at No. 2. Damn Jews! If it weren't for the Jews, queers would be perfectly hated everywhere.

I love the Colin Faril clip. I've been coming to Queersighted for about a month now and I addicted. Your probably my favorite blogger on the sight, Richard. As a young gay man, I don't really have a whole lot of gay influences, besides QAF and Will & Grace, but after reading your stories and articles I feel like I'm becoming more consious of my position, or really lack there of, in our community. I've started asking questions instead of just assuming that things are fine the way they are. I've started talking about things instead of keeping quiet because I didn't want to stir up trouble. Thats our place, to stir things up, I mean. So thank you for all your wisdom and all the experiences you've shared thus far. Keep 'em coming. And next time I'm in New York I would love to buy you a drink!!

Jonathan: Grey Goose Martini, straight up, very dry with olives. If the bartender is really hot, I ask for very dirty demanding that he crush the olives with his thumb.

Richard dear:
Thank you for this excellent news. As we all know, gays are overacheivers and I know that I personally, as a Best Little Boy in the World, would be pretty disappointed if gays didn't come in as #1 at whatever contest we are in.
Thank you, too, for the clip from 'A Home at the End of the World.' It's too bad the movie (based on one of my top favorite gay novels ever -- I've given more than 50 copies away as gifts) totally sucks. But seeing snippets is still nice, especially those involving Colin Farrell making out with another guy.
Finally, can I just say that, like most of Australia, I really, really hate you. Why? For the simple reason that you are becoming the favorite blogger on QueerSighted, according to Jonathan. And now you have young guys (Jonathan) wanting to take you out for drinks, too. I am so screwed, and not in the good way.

I read this research a while ago...it got some front page press coverage here in N Ireland as not only were we shown to be bigoted re the gay community but out bigots were the worse in the Western world!!!! Now that takes some doing as the research shows.
That said things are improving and whilst there may be a hierarchy with respect to prejudice still here, with homo-phobia right there at the top, we are challenging heterocentric thinking every day. The concept that there is an acceptable prejudice is alive and well in some quarters and the religious right foster that endlessly....I know however that compliance with the law and /$$$ will make things happen...eventually.
I trust Jonathan keeps coming here and finds a unique insight into all things gay....and Richard, we will be over in NYC, in Nov at the latest I hope..maybe we could also have the pleasure of a cocktail...dirty or otherwise in the Village.
Cheerio for now...Vincent...xx

Vincent: Martinis are always welcome. However, I am concerned about my image. No one is offering candy or flowers, just booze. Was it something I said?

Michael: The clip is from "A Home At The End Of The World". The point of the clip is that love and affection between two men is a beautiful thing and nothing to be feared or hated.
