How much bigotry and homophobic nonsense can one stand before snapping? And what would snapping entail? Going postal? Fleeing to Canada? Pulling a PETA and throwing pig's blood in the faces of known bigots? And did these questions and the suggestion of certain kinds of actions earn me a spot on the FBI or Homeland Security Watch List? So be it. And it isn't Dobson, Phelps or even Bush taking me to the edge--it's a fellow New Yorker, a Harvard graduate and a writer for our own New York Daily News.
Believing himself to be a reasonable and open-minded man, Errol Louis of The New York Daily News calmly and reasonably writes that with every step we take towards legalizing same sex marriage, we nudge the legal door open just a little bit more for polygamy and incest.
One can't help but to wonder--yet again-- what incest and polygamy have to do with sexual orientation. The answer for any thinking and moral human being is a simple and clear "nothing". Or to put it another way, incest has as much to do with same sex marriage as it has to do with interracial marriage--a crime in this country not so long ago that was viewed as a threat to the American family and all that we hold moral and good.
It's fair to say that legalizing same sex marriage will have as much of an impact on West Virginia farmers and their daughters as did striking down laws that prevented marriage between blacks and whites.
Mr. Louis should be ashamed of himself much in the same way Israeli Orthodox Jews should be ashamed of themselves for threatening to fire bomb Jerusalem's Pride march. Both should know better. Both should have learned more from their own histories. Both dishonor those who fought and died for freedom throughout the 20th and 19th Centuries.
And Errol Louis is not some redneck from Alabama or a disciple of Pat Robertson. Errol Louis was born in Harlem, raised in New Rochelle and lives in Crown Heights, Brooklyn with his wife, Juanita Scarlett. He is the son of a retired NYPD inspector and formerly served as associate editor of The New York Sun. He has taught college, co-founded an inner-city community credit union, run for City Council and was once named by New York Magazine as one of 10 New Yorkers making a difference "with energy, vision and independent thinking." He holds degrees from Harvard, Yale and Brooklyn Law School.
And Mr. Louis believes that gay Americans fighting for their civil rights and equality are posing a threat to all that is good and moral.
Mr. Louis generously concedes that "...it's obvious that New York's steps toward legalizing gay marriage won't trigger the collapse of civilization...But advocates of same-sex marriage should recognize that you don't have to be a religious fanatic or a bigot to wonder, with a certain uneasiness, where all of this is heading." Which again leaves us with the burning question: when marriage between blacks and whites was legalized some 40 years ago, why didn't it lead to an epidemic of man/sheep and woman/dolphin marriage demands? After all once the door was opened for one unnatural marital act, the door was opened for God knows what.
One thing that Mr. Louis gets right is that you don't have to be "a religious fanatic or a bigot" to suggest that same sex marriage will lead to incest. Mr. Louis demonstrates that all you have to be is a very insecure and self-absorbed heterosexual male egotist--who despite a neat collection of impressive degrees-- doesn't have the ability to discern the difference between common decency and claptrap. Reading the words of Mr. Louis, I find myself wondering if the out-of-control war against same sex marriage is nothing more than a pathetic and desperate last ditch effort by heterosexual males to be on top for no other reason than their passion to impregnate. Thanks to feminism they can no longer openly bash woman so they bash us.

I'm tired of hearing how immoral I am... I am a very moral person... I don't steal, lie or kill people. I think children are and should be sacred, loved, nurtured and cherished.
Now I didnt ask to be born a lesbian any more then Mr. Louis asked to be born black and my being a lesbian was no more or a choice on my part and being black was on his part.
I just want the same happinesses all should be able to enjoy... to live without hating or being hated and to raise my children in a loving home with the person I love.

Richard, great post, PLEASE send it to the NY POST.
Seems like homophobia is the last "acceptable" bigotry. Your post will strike some ire and have people calling you a racist. GO FOR IT. I find it staggering when black people, who have experienced and continue to experience discrimination in this country, trot out ridiculous homphobic rhetoric. Since when does my love for a member of the same sex make me interested in incest? Its infuriating to think that there's a contest to see who "really" faces the most discrimination, and skin color trumps sexual orientation and therefore gives license to perpetuate bigotry. Why not have a contest to see just how far we can create a true democracy with equal rights for all americans?

I'm still amazed when I hear blacks denounce the gay movement in this country. It's astonishing to me that this man, who I'm sure has experienced racism and discrimination in his lifetime, could so willingly pass that on to another minority group. The prejudice against gay people is religious-based, and so to a large extent was the prejudice against blacks. Whenever any group is demonized it affects all groups who are not of the dominant socio-political mainstream. There were millions of white people who stood up for the civil rights of blacks in this country, and it was the white politicians who eventually passed all the civil rights laws. It's so offensive to me that this person has used his platform to perpetuate such ignorance and homophobia. He should be fired, just like Isiah Washington and Don Imus, but he won't be.

I would love someone to challenge this post and call it bigoted, hurtful and insulting to suggest a comparison between heterosexual black/white couples and incest. I would agree that it is incredibly insulting and hurtful...as insulting and as hurtful as it is for us.

I read once that those who have experienced great persecution must work twice as hard when liberated to avoid becoming persecutors. It is behavior, afterall, that they know better than anyone else and we all tend to use what we know too quickly and without much thought. College degrees and public accolades do not guarantee a person will automatically recognize they are only perpetuating what they didn't like very much when it was being done to them. Thanks Richard. Once again you've proven that what we learned in college wasn't all bullshit! But then, some people manage to get degrees without learning anything! Case in point: Mr. Louis.

this guy reminds me of my senator here in nebraska (tony fulton) who recently rejected yet another bill to have equal (or any) rights in the workplace based on race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. because he's afraid pedofiles and transgenders will become school teachers. yes, this man was VOTED into office. coming from california to nebraska as a lesbian has been truly an experience...i'd like to become an activist here but don't know how and would love any advice/help.

The facts are that incest is a heterosexual thing and that heterosexuals have practiced it for centuries. Gay marriage would cause a lot less incest than the glut of heterosexuals who have married (and bred)their opposite-sex siblings(or first cousins) for centuries. Not to mention the children that have resulted from all those incestuous relationships.

As some of you know may know, I'm of Africa heritage. Hubby, on the other hand, is Caucasian. To most people, we're an interracial couple. It's nothing I really think about or notice, but other people (occasionally) comment on it.
As a result, I'm fairly sensitive to interracial dating. And I recently discovered InterracialMatch.com, an interracial dating website for men and women who are specifically looking for an interracial relationship. The site features people of all ethnicities, ages and socio-economic backgrounds, and it allows you to search by zip code for interacial personals.
The user friendly site allows members to send messages to potential dates, and you can join for free. The profiles include plenty of information, such as age, marital status, children, pets, music and movie preferences, political views and more. With this much information, it's easy to find someone who could be a great romantic match for you!
