On a scale of one to gay, Disney's made-for-TV High School Musical was off the freaking charts. The gay subtext, conveniently ignored by mainstream America, smacked every homosexual in the head who happened to be within the vicinity of the movie. The high school basketball star wants to sing and dance and asks his macho father, "Did you ever think about trying something new, but were afraid of what your friends might think?" Puh-leeze. Here's a bottle of lube and a copy of Inches Magazine -- embrace who you are, son. (A shockingly in-depth dissection of the movie's gay undertones can be found on my BAMBOO NATION blog.)
A DVD, a CD, a concert tour, an ice show, tons of merchandise, and $600 million in revenue later, the even-cheesier-than-the-first sequel has just premiered on the Disney Channel, and it will likely play over and over again until the end of time (December 21, 2012, according to the Mayan calendar), much to the satisfaction of tweenyboppers everywhere. The phenomenon is marketed expressly to 13-year-old girls, and, by default, to gay men, since most of them feel like there's a 13-year-old girl trapped inside their bodies.
Perhaps disturbed by the gay subtext that was pointed out to them by homosexuals with agendas, Disney attempts to butch up High School Musical 2, removing all traces of queer allegory and metaphor and amping up the heterosexual love triangle. Even so, this sequel (which exists in a parallel universe where the high school experience is so watered down that it might as well be clear) is perhaps even gayer than the first movie.

First of all, decades from now, when grown straight women and grown gay men are asked about when they first started having sexual feelings, most of them will say, "When I saw High School Musical 2!" That's because heartthrob Zac Efron, the basketball star in question who bares his hot stomach in the latest issue of Rolling Stone, can be seen in the movie walking around in a tight tank top, playing hoops with his shirt off, splashing in a pool in cute swim trunks, and doing a musical number wearing all black in which he dances on the sand dramatically like a David Copperfield TV special from the 80s. So gay.
Then there's the strange case of Ryan Evans, played by
Lucas Grabeel. He is the film's only overtly gay character, though they avoid making verbal references to his sexuality. Instead, he wears a pink shirt and pink beret at the movie's start; he enjoys making curiously fey gestures; he does yoga with his mother; he pouts when he doesn't get to wear his "tiki warrior outfit"; and he gets taunted into playing baseball. His position? Pitcher! So gay.
And can we talk about the musical numbers? The dance moves are leftovers from the boy band era of the late 90s, and the songs sound like the Backstreet Boys' unreleased demos. That's not a complaint, by the way, because the musical numbers are fun and, frankly, awesome in their unabashed ridiculousness. When Zac starts shuffling his feet 30 seconds into the song, "Work This Out," you can't help but be amazed, appalled, and admiring all at once. So gay:
Finally, HSM2 provides a gift to drag queens everywhere in the form of a song that will be lip-synced at drag shows for the next five years. It's called "Fabulous," sung by the bitchy Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale), in which she belts: "I want fabulous/That's my simple request!" So gay.
When I sing myself to sleep tonight, I will do so with tunes from High School Musical 2. Was it as gay for you as it was for me?

Editors Note:
Readers, when I saw the pop culture avalanche that the new 'High School Musical 2' (HSM2) movie was about to pour down on us all last week, I knew its inherent gayness had to be explored here. The only problem was neither I or any of QueerSighted's bloggers were intimately familiar with it.
I couldn't let that stand in the way of exploring what I knew in my heart had to be a gazillion degrees of gayness associated with anything called 'High School Musical,' so I set out to identify some homo-reinforcements -- and struck gay gold. On Friday, I accidentally met online a guy who fit the bill to a "G": blogger Prince Gomolvilas. I asked Prince to write a guest blog post about just how gay this show is, and he came through with rainbow colors.
Oh and one other thing, QueerSighted artist-pal David Gilmore at Pretty on the Outside.com sent us the celebritorial illustration above of Zac Efron, about whom he said, "When I think of [Zac's] unruly head of hair, I smile and immediately think of Farrah and that famous swimsuit poster of her."
Thanks to Prince and David.

Oh the ignorance!!! Yes, I would agree that our school systems have failed us. Most of these comments are so appallingly uninformed and unintelligent that I could only get through the first page - it turned my stomach.
Obviously, a good number of commentors were oblivious to what site they were on and have no clue what gay actually means. How sad for them. Meranda doesn't even seem to know that FREE SPEECH means that everyone HAS THE RIGHT to call anyone and anything whatever they want. So much for social studies classes.
And this pervasive idea that calling the movie gay is putting it down? What's wrong with being gay? I'm sure some see "gay" as a compliment. Seeing it as a put down means you're the one getting insulting - of gay people everywhere.
Honestly, I had never thought of Disney movies as gay. I did see many of them as reinforcing traditional hetero stereotypes and social roles, but I will have to take a new look at them now. Thanks for the perspective - I may have "a whole new world" ahead of me!

Hahaha! I love High School Musical. Ryan is my favorite character and I sing "Fabulous" whenever I get the chance. I LOVE this theory of HSM as being gay!
This was definitely my favorite part: "Here's a bottle of lube and a copy of Inches Magazine -- embrace who you are, son."
Anyway, for those of you who are bitching about how Disney didn't make the movie to be gay, get over yourselves. It's only a fun idea to think about. And just because something is made for 12 year olds doesn't mean it can't have gay themes. I know plenty of people who either knew they were gay at age 12 or at least thought they might be. So chill out. It's not like Kenneth Hill is trying to insult your movie. He obviously thinks the gay themes are awesome and so do I.

People are so fucking stupid. They don't understand that the author isn't trying to say that Troy is gay because he likes to sing and dance, but rather that HSM 1/2 is full of homosexual connotations. This has been stated in the article, learn to read before you flip and ignorant shit. Although i must admit reading these comments written mostly by girls under the age of 14 is fucking hilarious.

Hey I love the high school musicals. For some people singing is a hobbie for others it's a dream to come true. I love to sing, but im struggling to make it. As I watch the high school musicals they persue me to make my wish come true. So I feel that by you calling the movie "gay" then your truly putting down all the fans and the singers who could be in the show next.

I do hope you realize these films are directed towards younger kids, hence the reason they are a disney channel original movie.
None of them will know the meaning of gay or homosexual for a few solid years and if you ask me, this film is a great story directed to a younger age group about how you can do anything you set your mind to.
Yes, I think some of the parts and songs are a bit sketchy but in the end its all in good fun and I think it deserves much more credit than you gave it.

Wow.
Okay, I didn't really like the HSM's, or all the hype that they got. I didn't think it was worth it.
But calling them GAY... is way off. I admit, Ryan definitely appears gay. But the rest of them, no way, you're taking the quotes and scenes out of context, and interpreting them in ways that they weren't meant to be. If you're using "gay" as a synonym for "stupid", then we might possibly have something going. But, since I'm pretty sure this was written (or at least helped along) by a gay person, gay doesn't stupid.

High school musical is not gay!!!. Its just a show where a bunch of kids have their dreams come true. It makes all the kids in country happy and they also love the songs. So if you say its gay then your calling all the kids in america gay for watching. So a little heads up to you, GET A LIFE!!

Samantha, if you correctly read the article he wasn't calling the movie gay, as in "Thats so gay!11oneshift" but as in..homosexual-ee-like, like almost all Disney movies are (espcially with teenage guy casts). By saying "omg putting down all the fans" you're stating that you took the comment gay as an insult, which was not what it was implied to be. (Hello-- this is "Queersighted")

Hey just because a guy wants to sing and stuff doesn't mean he's gay! I happen to be a fan of the movies myself, and I think that it is extremely rude to call this movie a gay movie! So what would you call a male dancer??? Is he gay cause he wears a leotard?? I don't think so! I think these movies are inspiring to all the soon-to-be singers and dancers of the world who are afraid to come out of there shell because of stuff like what you wrote!!

It's a children's movie. What is a grown man doing watching Disney channel anyway? And, the commentary seems to be rather anti-gay, which is upsetting in itself. Everyone's always complaining that Disney doesn't properly represent the American public, always leaving out minority roles. Maybe they wanted to extend their product to a wider audience. And men "artsy" and into "theater" are not automatically "gay". But once again, my main point: It's a movie geared toward 12 year old girls. They like it (a lot), which means Disney, once again, knew exactly what they're doing.

I love HSM and HSM2 and you probably think everything is gay because you are. They are great movies why not write something nice about them instead???

It is a kids movie! It is not meant to stir sexual feelings of adults; homesexual or not. TO try to define this children's movie as an iconic piece of "gay culture" is a bit on the perverted side. There is so little that children have to watch that is untainted by cynical adults. Please let them have High School Musical without focusing spotlights where they do not belong.

Actually, this movie wasn't that bad.
I'll addmitt it was cheesy,
but i don't think it was gay.
Now, gay is a little ridiculous.
Kenith Hill is probably just jealous that
he doesn't have that talent ;D
And, also, if it bothers you so much of how "gay"
it is, then don't watch it!
They didn't make it so 40 year-old bloggers
can critisize(or however you spell it)
their movie that was made for my 8 year-old
sister. So, if it bothers you to watch it,
i have a solution,
SHUT IT OFF!!!
Don't cry about it.
kthanksbye ;]
