News - A couple from Southampton who work as police officers are believed to be Britain's first gay couple to father a baby after the sister of one of the men volunteered as a surrogate.
According to The Sun newspaper, constable Ivan Sigston, 48 and special constable Steven Ponder, 28, were both present when Steven's sister Lorna Bradbury gave birth to William Campbell Ponder-Sigston on June 13th at her home in Worthing, Sussex.
A source told the newspaper: "Ivan and Steven have talked about wanting to raise a family like any other couple since they have been together - and incredibly Steven's sister Lorna offered".
Biological father of the child is Ivan Sigston, but as the "father" section on the birth certificate is left blank, the couple will have to formally adopt the baby. Lorna Bradbury is currently William's legal guardian as only her name is listed on the birth certificate.
The friend insists that no fee was paid to Lorna: "It was done purely out of a sister's love for her brother". He or she also says: "I am sure many people will not approve but this was an arrangement between three consenting adults - and William will be brought up with much love."
The couple is said to be over the moon and they have decorated a room in blue as a nursery.
