News - Mexico City is setting a precedent as it is set to become the first city in Latin America to allow gay marriage. Lawmakers in the city passed a bill yesterday redefining marriage from "a union between a man and a woman" to "the free uniting of two people". Now it's up to the city's mayor to sign the bill into law.

Gay rights activists Ruben Duran and Saul Aparicio (photo) shared a kiss in front of Mexico City's local assembly as they celebrate the legalization of same-sex marriage. The new bill is said to give more rights to same-sex couples and will even give gay couples the right to adopt.
The city already allowed civil partnerships back in 2006 but takes these to the next level by allowing gay marriage. So far gay marriage is only available in Spain, Canada, Belgium, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, South Africa as well as in some US States.
