- Pete Waterman has been revealed as the producer for 2010's UK entry into the Eurovision Song Contest. The producer, who shamelessly takes credit for launching the career of Kylie Minogue, is hoping to turn things around for the UK at May's ceremony – which takes place in Oslo this year.

"Eurovision is one of those iconic competitions that has stood the test of time and keeps coming up with great acts, great tunes and great performances. Life's full of challenges and I'm relishing the opportunity to put my own stamp on this one," said Waterman.

And this is certainly a challenge. In recent years, a well-known 'name' has been linked to Eurovision each year in order to revamp our contribution, and turn things around. But the UK entry always seems to be disregarded, no matter who is singing, what the style of song is, or who is producing. Even getting Andrew Lloyd Webber on board last year to create a 'West End' style track was unsuccessful.

The entry, 'It's My Time' sung by the latest Sugababes recruit Jade Ewen, received more than average attention from critics, but it failed to get support from the UK public and only scraped into the UK top 30 singles chart. It did however come fifth in the contest, which is a lot higher than previous years.

X Factor runner-up Andy Abraham came joint last in 2008, whilst Scooch managed a bottom three placement in 2007.

The last time that the UK won was back in 1997. 'Love Shine A Light' by Katrina and The Waves ('Walking On Sunshine') became a Eurovision classic. Before that, 'Making Your Mind Up' by Bucks Fizz, were the previous winners – back in 1981.

Can we score for the third time in almost thirty years? Executive producer for the UK broadcast of the Eurovision Song Contest, Phil Parsons believes so: "This year, with an extremely successful pop writer, the aim is to build on the UK's success while moving on in style and doing something different. Pete Waterman has an incredible track record of hits that are known all around Europe, so we're thrilled that he has taken on Eurovision."

Whilst part of one of the most successful pop production teams ever - Stock, Aitken and Waterman, Pete was responsible for big hits from many of the 1980's and 1990's biggest stars – including: Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Bananarama, Rick Astley, and Steps.
