News - Colin Firth won 'Best Actor' at last night's Bafta's for his performance in Tom Ford's 'A Single Man'. Firth plays George, a gay college professor breaking down after his partner dies in a car accident. Firth said of working with the director/fashion designer:
"An encounter with Tom Ford is come away feeling resuscitated a little more worldy, better informed, better groomed, more fragranced and more nominated than one has ever been before.
"What Tom Ford doesn't know is I have the email in my outbox telling him I could not possibly do this," Firth said. "I was about to send it when a man came to repair my fridge ... so I would like to thank the fridge guy."
Sounds like the beginning of a porno doesn't it? Albeit an intellectual one where they converse about Isherwood.
The night was presented with gentle humour from Jonathan Ross, in the cavernous opulence of The Royal Opera House.
The big winner of the night was 'The Hurt Locker', which walked away with six Bafta awards, including best film and best director for Kathryn Bigelow. She will now be hoping to become the first female director to win at the Oscar's, again beating James Cameron's Avatar, which scooped only two awards for production design and visual effects.
There were no surprises when it came to the actress awards. Leading went to Brit newcomer Carey Mulligan for 'An Education' and supporting role went to the brilliant and terrifying Mo'Nique for 'Precious'.
Other British winners include 'Fish Tank' as Outstanding British Film, 'The Young Victoria' which took costume and hair and make-up. Duncan Jones (aka Zowie Bowie) received the Outstanding debut award for his brilliant sci-fi 'Moon'. He tearfully accepted the award saying: "Finally, I think I've found what I love doing."
This year's Fellowship went to Vanessa Redgrave, who gave the most peculiar acceptance speech. Clearly overcome with the occasion she failed to make sense of her notes claiming the night had "done her in". She managed to pay tribute to the new President of Bafta Prince William who presented her with the awards, and his father, praising his "intelligence, humility and kindness".
