Canadian-American troubadour Rufus Wainwright -- or "Old Swoopy," as we call him around here -- is set to release his sixth studio album this spring. All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu will hit stores in Canada on March 23, followed by April 5 in the UK (where he kicks off a brief tour at London's Sadler Wells Theatre on April 13), and, finally, in the US on April 20. Alas, despite its provocative title, the follow up to 2007's Release the Stars is not a song cycle for the '60s Scottish pop singer. The first half is plucked from Shakespeare's Sonnet 43 (one of three poems by the bard set to new music on the record; the other tunes are wholly Wainwright originals), while the latter refers to the femme fatale Wainwright claims lurks within us all.
The songwriter has acknowledged actress Louise Brooks, star of G.W. Pabst's 1929 silent classic Pandora's Box (in which she played the man-eating Lulu), as a personal muse for the new project. We're betting the opera buff had Alban Berg's Lulu on the brain, too. Wainwright's official website promises a preview of new music soon. In the meantime, here's the track list:
