Owen Pallett, whom you may know under his musical moniker Final Fantasy (or as the guy who arranges strings for The Arcade Fire), covered Guided By Voices "Game of Pricks" for The Onion's AV Club this week as part of its "Undercover" series. And it's pretty great! The premise of the series is simple: 25 bands get to pick from 25 possible songs to cover, and as each song is covered, it is then eliminated as a choice. Subsequently, the list of choices for future musicians gets smaller. Owen chose to cover "Game of Pricks" because he loved the rhythm.
Pallett, who is a pretty soft spoken guy by nature, gets real with his interviewers for some commentary at the beginning. When asked if he's a a GBV fan, Pallett responds, "I was until I saw them live - they were amazing, they were the best live band, but it was a lot of jocks." As someone who plays to more sedate indie crowds and utilizes overhead projection technology for live light shows, it's not surprising that he might be turned off by music that attracts a surly, beer-throwing crowd. His most recent album Heartland, the first released under his own name, is a sensitive concept album following the development of a young boy named Lewis narrated in postmodern fashion by an omnipresent "Owen."
