I love animals, in fact, I got my BS in Zoology and I have two rescued cats, and a rescued Chihuahua. You can bet your bottom dollar that when I heard the most recent story about Ellen Degeneres and her dog-rescue fiasco, it really got my blood boiling.
Ellen and her girlfriend, Portia de Rossi, adopted Iggy (a Brussels Griffon mix) from Mutts and Moms (affiliated with Paws Boutique), a dog adoption agency . Unfortunately, Ellen's cats were queens of the roost and didn't give the dog such a warm welcome home. Despite Ellen's efforts to integrate the animals, her cats were just not having it. Ellen decided to do a good deed and give Iggy to her good friend and hairstylist, a woman who is married, with
A few weeks ago I shared with you the new PETA ad featuring a birthday-suit-clad Alicia Silverstone. The controversial ad, which has since been pulled by Houston, TX's Comcast Cable Company for being too racy, shows Silverstone and her ample breasts advocating vegetarianism by explaining to the world that eating veggies makes you feel (and look) like a million bucks. The ad, which seemed to be targeted mostly towards straight men (and lesbians) has caused quite an array of responses, both negative and positive.
One group that had a blatant reaction to the video was Shake State, a Vlogging group that does humorous videos and parodies for YouTube, MySpace and other video-centric websites. Their "Alicia Silverstone Naked PETA Spoof" is certainly that but does it go too far? The video has had over 14,000 hits in just 5 days and although I thought it was pretty offensive, I'll let you be the judge.
I heart indie rock in a big way, so when I was contacted by Ms. Led's PR and asked to review their album, you can bet I jumped on the opportunity faster than lesbians at a KY Jelly wrestling match. A few weeks later, and the CD is STILL on repeat in my car stereo. Yeah, they're good and they're gay.
Let me give you a little background on the band. Ms. Led is a Seattle-based Quintet of three girls and a dude who have just released their third album titled, "Shake Yourself Awake." Ms. Led's first two albums quickly sold out of their first pressings. All the while, the band has maintained their DIY ethic and built a dedicated following. Often referred to as a "must-see live show," Ms. Led have become recognized not only for their political edge but also for their catchy, even danceable songs and their infectious energy and raw emotion.
The group has toured with such acts as The Gossip, 50 Foot Wave, The Avengers, The Thermals and The Reputation and has played at such prestigious festivals as the Bumbershoot Festival, Ladyfest, and the Capitol Hill Block Party. In support of Shake Yourself Awake, Ms. Led just recently brought their high-energy live show to the masses with a national tour this summer. As I mentioned before, the band includes several openly gay
I may not have itty bitty titties (although mine are real), I can still appreciate a grass-roots-style lesbian feminist movie any day of the week. That's why I was thrilled to be able to attend the West Hollywood movie premier of "Itty Bitty Titty Committee" and the after party on Monday night.
You may remember back to June when fellow blogger, Arlan, posted a blog called "Raise Your Fist If You Like Boobs" where she talks about her love of breasts and gives the new movie, Itty Bitty Titty Committee a shout-out and brief introduction. The movie first debuted at the Berlin Film Festival, and has since played at several other film festivals, including the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. The movie is meant to make a bold statement about women, how society views them and how they view themselves.
Itty Bitty Titty Committee is one of those movies that gets you all fired up and makes you laugh while doing it. The movie succeeds in spending equal amounts of time exploring the characters and documenting their wacky works involved in their feminist group, C(I)A - "Clits In Action". The main character, Anna (played by Melanie Diaz) takes a journey which is quite profound; she goes from a shy conformist to a subversive, pro-femme anarchist who celebrates her newly found acceptance into the lesbian community. Responsible for introducing her to this underground world is Sadie, who is attached to her controlling girlfriend despite all the verve and sass she displays as the C(I)A's unofficial leader. A wild romance develops between Sadie and Anna, propelling the central conflict of the plot and causing all sorts of chaos within the group dynamic.
In a character-based comedy, casting is everything, and in Itty Bitty it's spot on.
PETA has a new GoVeg campaign featuring Alicia Silverstone, the new face (and body) of PETA. This drop-dead gorgeous beauty pretty much bares all in PETA's new risque "first-ever naked veggie testimonial". After watching the ad, I had to pick my jaw off the floor and commend PETA for bringing sexy back to such an earthy, crunchy issue.
I wonder if PETA is using the ad to target straight men and lesbians? Are gay men and straight women next? Picture it: Jake Gyllenhaal riding bareback at a Midwestern ranch to bring attention to the issue of meat. Oh wait, that's a movie of an entirely different sort ...
Got beef?
Well, if a naked Alicia Silverstone is asking you might have to reconsider.
Coming out to your parents is every lesbian's (or gay man's) worst nightmare. Can anyone really anticipate exactly how their parents will react? Are there some ways to come out to your parents that are better than others? I believe the answer to this question is "Yes". I would like to offer up these nine clinically* proven steps for coming out to your parents that will help them understand your "new lifestyle" with ease.
*based on personal results
Step 1 - Start Dropping Hints By dropping really obvious hints to your parents over the course of time, it will help "ease" them into the notion that their daughter is a muff diver. Make comments about women on TV: "Wow, Angelina Jolie looks smokin' hot in that low-cut dress" or "What I wouldn't give to meet Ellen Degeneres, she's pretty much my hero" or "Ann Coulter is totally a repressed dyke in disguise". Dropping hints like these on a regular basis might give your parents an inclination that your refusal to wear dresses is more than just bad fashion sense.
Recently, my girlfriend and I were browsing the walls of Blockbuster, searching for something that was worth the $4 rental that didn't involve a bunch of men on motorcycles or girls getting knocked up. With each new DVD release these days, I have to wonder why in god's name anyone would go see half of these movies. But I digress...
I was checking out the indie films because those seem to promise more depth and true movie-making magic than the standard "blockbuster" sellouts. I happened to stumble upon a movie called "Floored by Love" about a lesbian couple, paralled by a teenage boy coming out of the closet. At only 50 minutes long, I was skeptical about its quality, but I figured at least it had queer content and that was good enough for me. We grabbed our rental and jetted home to snuggle up and watch.
Floored by Love, which is directed by Desiree Lim, hails itself as a "double-comedy" and "family-friendly." This "double comedy" takes place in British Columbia, Canada and is about an Asian-American lesbian couple and an African-American teenage boy, all of whom are dealing with coming out, in very different ways. Story One features Janet and Cara. Together for
Apparently being a committed and active minister in the Presbyterian church means nothing these days if your sexual orientation isn't as straight as the very cross you worship. The U.S. Presbyterian Church has rebuked one of its ministers who describes herself as a "lesbian evangelist" for presiding over two gay weddings, officials said on Friday.
Rev. Jane Adams Spahr, 65, violated church doctrine when she officiated at the unions of two gay couples in 2004 and 2005. In 1992, she became the first openly lesbian Presbyterian minister to be appointed a local church pastor -- a move later overturned by the church's top judicial body. She since has been an outspoken advocate for gay rights -- and gay marriage rites.
Spahr, a minister for more than 30 years, came out as a lesbian in 1978. The Presbyterian Church does not allow openly gay or lesbian members to serve as ministers. Still, she was allowed to keep her position but was prohibited from leading an individual church.
The Presbyterian Church is among several Protestant denominations embroiled in debates over what role gays should have in their churches. Under a ruling by the denomination's highest court in 2000, Presbyterian ministers may bless same-sex unions as long as they do not equate the relationships with marriage and the ceremonies do not mimic traditional weddings. I guess your "union" is only allowed to be blessed if you get married on a beach in a hula skirt or if you don't wear a big white gown and/or tuxedo down the aisle.
When I think of rocker chicks, one word comes to mind: HOT, so if I get the chance to go to an all girls rock show, you know I'm there. All these thoughts of rocker chicks made me think back to a special day back in high school. Let's go back to 1999... I was only 16 years old and feeling pretty lucky to be invited to a concert by my senior friends. They told me it was called the Lilith Fair and it was going to be so much fun! The line-up for that concert date was Mya, Sheryl Crow, The Pretenders and Sarah McLachlan (among many others) and I remember being ecstatic that I'd get to see such amazing artists all in one day.
I remember it was very hot and muggy on that day at "Great Woods" Ampitheater in Mansfield, MA, and I found myself surrounded by hordes of women. Everyone was hugging and kissing each other, dancing freely to the sweet smell of mary jane, and singing to the music at the top their lungs. Some of them even took their tops off! I imagine it must have resembled the early days of the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival and I knew right then and there I had truly found heaven. But, the sad reality was that 1999 was the last year for Lilith Fair and there hasn't been many all-women concert events since then. Until now...
After seeing fellow blogger Arlan's article about Butches and Femmes, I got to thinking...do you ever have trouble figuring out where you fall on the butch-femme scale? I'm not talking about physical appearance either, I'm talking about personality and general outlook on life. How a lesbian looks may not be reflective of their personality, although most women seem to mirror their general demeanor through their appearance.
Most lesbian women tend to fall somewhere between extremely femme and extremely butch. There's a lot of variation in between and although I'm generally not into putting a label on or stereotyping people, I found a very interesting and thorough quiz that really breaks down the butch/femme spectrum. I will warn you, at 100 questions the test is rather lengthy, although it seems to be complete and thorough and if you ask me, it's definitely worth taking the time to fill it out. Plus, it's pretty funny too. You might even surprise yourself when it comes to the answer, which isn't just a one-word response, but rather a lengthy explanation of why you are what you are.
I'd love to see your results, so please post them in the comments section. In case you're wondering, I got Androgyne, which exactly in the middle of the butch/femme spectrum!
Here is the full spectrum list, for your reference: EF - Extreme Femme LF - Lipstick Femme CF - Classic Femme PF - Practical Femme SF - Strong Femme SA - Soft Androgyne AN - Androgyne HA - Hard Androgyne GB - Gentle Butch FB - Feminist Butch CB - Classic Butch BB - Boot Butch EB - Extreme Butch
Oops! She did it again, made out with a friend, only this time was a chick, oh baby, baby...
Is Britney Spears a bisexual? Am I the only one who saw this coming from a mile away? Clearly, Britney "I just put my tongue down your throat" Spears has been on the sexual warpath since she broke up K-Fed. She's been spotted making out with guys all over Los Angeles, and now she's being linked "romantically" with her former assistant. I'm pretty sure I saw her canoodling with an Orangatan at the LA Zoo, but don't tell the media, or else it'll make her look like a bad parent.
OK! Magazine claims to have some hot press on their hands. According to an article set for publication in OK! Britney's had "bisexual romps" with her 21-year-old ex-assistant, Shannon Funk. Spears fired Funk after a short 3-week employment. During those three weeks, though, those girls were like two peas in a pod. Funk had even been seen holding Spears' children when her own arms were just too damn tired to hold them herself.
I am a huge Nip/Tuck fan - in fact, I've been watching the show since it aired on FX for the very first episode on 7/22/2003. As Season 5 prepares to air this fall, on 10/23/2007, tittilating glimpses of the up-comng season are revealed.
Nip/Tuck has featured several gay and transgendered characters over the years, including the deliciously attractive Famke Jansen, who played Julia's (Joely Richardson) MTF life coach. Then there was the erotic dream that Christian (Julian McMahon) had where he and his partner, Sean (Dylan Walsh), elope on a gay trip together during a time when Christian is questioning his own sexuality. Of course we cannot forget one of the main supporting characters, Liz Winters(Roma Maffia) a dyke with a sense of humor, who plays an anesthesiologist working under Christian and Sean. Liz is very secure in her sexual orientation and dates Alanis Morissette with a dramatic flair for several episodes.
With the consistent gay and lesbian characters on the show, I could only hope that Season 5 would have something spectacularly sexy in store for us. Boy was I right!! According to TV Guide,
Let's face it, ever since the days of Sapphos, lesbians have entered relationships at warp speed. The excerpt below is a passage from a poem written by Sapphos herself while living on the Isle of Lesbos at the time of Ancient Greece:
"but come--if ever before having heard my voice from far away you listened, and leaving your father's golden home you came
in your chariot yoked with swift, lovely sparrows bringing you over the dark earth thick-feathered wings swirling down from the sky through mid-air
arriving quickly--you, Blessed One, with a smile on your unaging face asking again what have I suffered and why am I calling again..."
There's the age old running joke Q:"What does a lesbian bring on the second date?" A: "A U-Haul" and for some reason, all lesbians are guilty of going through this at least once in their dating lives. So what's up with lesbians and their tendency to progress in a relationship at lighting speed? Well, I've come up with a few of my own theories that I would like to explore here.
The Gymnast, a new film by Ned Farr, is a touching and provocative drama about sexuality, beauty and confusion in middle age. The movie is brave and realistic with just a touch of humor, and a resounding storyline that is sure to appeal to women of all ages and sexualities on some level or another. Not only is the film beautifully choreographed but it represents two lesbian film subjects that are seriously lacking in film today: middle aged women and Asian American women. The movie speaks out with a rhythmic beauty and emotional intensity that can only be found between two dynamic and credibly developed female characters.
The movie starts with a focus on its central character, Jane (played by producer Dreya Weber, who starred as dark-haired jock Luce in the 1996 indie lesbian film Everything Relative), a 40-something ex-Olympic gymnast who's living a monotonous life as a massage therapist after a gymnastics injury ruined any chances of winning a medal years before. Her days are spent popping anti-depressants and secretly trying half-heartedly to get pregnant by
My friends and girlfriend are probably going to kill me for sharing this story, but they can't say I didn't warn them. I almost always tell my friends the disclaimer, "I'm a gay blogger for AOL, be forewarned, I could blog about you." Most of them just laugh and say something along the lines of, "Oh honey, my life isn't that interesting..." until they're reading about themselves the next day on the internet. Let's just say my blog, When Lesbians Go Crazy was inspired by true events.
My girlfriend and I recently went to the home of another lesbian couple we are friends with. It started off as any other normal double date: beer, pizza and an enjoyable showing of 'Mean Girls'. About an hour into the movie, the beers turned into frozen margaritas and the pizza was gone. After the movie ended, the only logical thing to do was
