Another Side Of Pride: The Hidden Gay History of New York's East Village
< Previous Photo | Next Photo >

New York's East Village has more gay history packed into its seedy and narrow streets than all of Greenwich Village and Chelsea combined. Sadly, as a result of the AIDS crisis, the almost complete disappearance of gay and straight political activism and the young gay disdain for history, the gay landmarks of the East Village have mostly disappeared, both physically and in our memories. New York lovingly preserves many of its historical landmarks, but gay landmarks are turned into banks and dog runs. Even Stonewall was only just recently saved from demolition. My friend, Sasha, however, stands ready to learn. (Editor's Note: If you missed the introduction to this gallery by Richard Rothstein, find out more about what you're looking at here.)

3. Was watching History Channels "70's Fever" where they showed the Stonewall riot, with the comment that no one knew why the Stonewall patrons were so agitated the night of the raid.
What many Gay History writers have failed to note or speak about wae what those patrons were fired up about that night.
What fired them up was that two nights before, the Police raided Club 42 (I believe was the name) at 42 Saint Marks place. Some may recall that when one entered, there was a long bar along the right side. When one got to the end of that bar, to the left was a good size room with tables and dancing and the fanmous flashing red light that a bartender would activate if someone suspicious came in, like a cop, so that all the dancing would stop. There was a door to the back kitchen.
There were two doorways from the back room to the bar area. There was also a shorter, set back bar on the wall opposite these doorways, which had an awning over it.
That night (two nights before Stonewall), this club was raided, and that raid and what happened there is what fired up the Stonewall patrons, there was talk of what happened all along Greenwich Avenue.
When the cops came in in "plain clothes", two of them were seen ri[pping down the awning over the small back bar. When they diid that one of the gay guys who had no idea they were cops, went out and started punching out the cops.
This gay guy (who looked straight, was at the club with a bunch of gay and straight friends. When his friends saw him punching out the guys (cops) teraing down the awning, they all came running out of the back room and started punching out the other plain clothes and uniformed cops. When that happened, ALL the bars patrons joined in and were throwing glasses and bottles and punching out the cops while fighting top get out the door.
This was the true rebellion against gay persecutuion that caused the patrons of the Stonewall to stand up and fight against the police that night.
I was present and participated in the Club 42 rebellion.
Does anyone else recall this incident?
I am sure if someone took the time to check the Police records of the few nights before the Stonewall riot they will find the Police Reports of the Saint Mark's Place raid
